Solid state is term that refers to electronic circuitry that is built entirely out of semiconductors. The term was originally used to define those electronics such as a transistor radio that used semiconductors rather than vacuum tubes in its construction. Most all electronics that we have today are built around semiconductors and chips. In terms of a SSD, it refers to the fact that the primary storage medium is through semiconductors rather than a magnetic media such as a hard drive.

When you need to wipe SSD?

When you are selling your SSD drive or giving someone’s to access, and then make sure that all the contents of the SSD are wiped. Because when you delete the file or format, it is not actually removed from there as long as the area of the SSD is overwritten with new information. So anyone can misuse your confidential information

SSD stores data in block instead in sectors as with magnetic storage drives. Overwriting a block was previously used involves copying the contents of the block to the cache, wiping the block’s contents, delete the block to be overwritten from cache, writing the new data to cache and re-writing the block with new data. As an SSD is used with files that are deleted or changed frequently, the performance can drop as soon as the file using the block is deleted.

What are the sanitization standard for wipe SSD?

While deleting or erasing files simply marks file space as available for reuse, disk erasing utility overwrites all the data space on a storage device (SSD) replacing useful data with garbage data. Depending upon the method used, data could be overwritten with zeros or with some random values.

  • Fast Zero Overwrite- Overwriting using a fixed sequence of characters
  • Random Overwrite- Data is overwritten using random characters in various passes
  • US Navy, NAVSO P-5239-26_RLL- Two different fixed values are made use of for overwriting data
  • US Department of Defense (DoD 5220.22-M)_DOD Standard 5220.28 STD- Data is overwritten with a fixed value, then the complement of the same and finally with a random value
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization_NATO standard- Data is overwritten seven times, first six times with a particular value and the seventh time with a random value
  • Peter Gutmann Secure Deletion- The data is overwritten thirty five times using a combination of both fixed and random values
  • German:VSITR-US Department of Defense (DoD 5220.22-M)- Considered the best option along with Peter Gutmann method for erasing hard disk data
  • Gutmann Method- Similar to the previous method of data deletion, however a little complicated than the former

The above mentioned shredding patterns overwrite your old data with garbage or junk values. If anyone tries to recover data, then they’ll get only junk values.

What are the advantages of this software?

Drive Wipe software uses nine different standard shredding patterns which are recommended by defense and law making organization like NATO and US Department of Defense to wipe SSD drive. These special shredding patterns overwrite the deleted files with some garbage or junk values, after this no one can recover deleted data from the hard disk drive by using file recovery software. To wipe format hard drive read here.
